Down Beckenham, kent. Dear Sir: I am much obliged for your etter of April 21th and for the present of your work and the Review. I shall be pleased and honoured to have my book translated in Spanish, by which means it may be Known in the large kingdom of Spain, and in the widest extented regions where spanish is spoken. I directed my publisher to send a copy of the Origin by post to you yesterday, fasther authorisation is required than this note. I have nothing to add to the spanish edition, and will only add my sincere hopes that it may be sucersful. I have the honour to remain, dear Sir, yours faithfully Ch. Darwin.

Down Beckenham, kent. Dear Sir: Le agradezco mucho su carta del 21 de Abril y el regalo de su libro y de la Revista. Me place y honra que se traduzca mi libro al español, pues de este modo será leido en el dilatado reino de España y en las extendidísimas regiones donde se habla el castellano. He dado a mi editor la orden de que enviara á V. por correo ayer un ejemplar del Orígen. No hace falta más autorizacion que esta carta. Nada tengo que añadir para la edición española, á no ser mis esperanzas sinceras de que obtenga un buen éxito. Tengo el honor de quedar, querido señor, fielmente vuestro. Ch. Darwin.

El traductor remitió á Mr. Ch. Darwin los primeros pliegos de la version española, y recibió una atenta carta, la cual traducimos.

Down Beckenham, kent. Dear Sir: I received only this morning the sheets of the spanish translation of my Origin of Species, and like much the appearance of the type etc., and am glad to see what progress has been made. With reference to your obliging note of the 14th I am extremely sony to say that on account of my weak health and being much overworked i cannot undestake to read over the sheets. The labour would be considerable, from waut of practice I have forgotten much of waht I formerly know of your fine language. The few pages which I have read seen to me very cleacy expressed whith cordial wishes for the success of the work I remain, dear Sir, yours faithfully. Ch. Darwin.

Dear Sir: Hasta esta mañana no he recibido los pliegos de la traduccion española de mi Origen de las especies, y me gusta mucho el aspecto del tipo, etc., y me causa alegría ver cuán adelantada va la obra. Con respecto á la carta de V. del 14, que es de agradecer, siento en extremo decir que por mi mala salud y exceso de trabajo no puedo emprender la tarea de leer con detencion los pliegos. Sería un trabajo considerable, pues he olvidado mucho de lo que ántes sabía de vuestro hermoso idioma, por falta de práctica. Las pocas páginas me he leído parécenme clarísimamente expresadas. Con deseos cordiales por el éxito de la obra, quedo, querido señor, fielmente vuestro. Ch. Darwin.
